Michigan associate head coach Biff Poggi will take over as the team's interim during head coach Sherrone Moore's self-imposed two-game suspension, Moore announced during his weekly media availability on Monday (September 8).

Poggi, who had previously worked on former Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh's staff as an analyst in 2016 and as an assistant head coach in 2021 and 2022, returned to Ann Arbor after spending the past two seasons as Charlotte's head coach, going 6-16 (4-10 AAC) in 32 games.

“He’s been in the program before. His experience as a head coach, his love for the players, his knowledge of everybody in the building and keeping that cohesion was huge,” Moore said of Poggi via Maize N Brew. “I also wanted our coordinators to be able to continue their jobs as they go through the season. Let me come back and there be no hiccups. I think that’s going to be important.”

Moore confirmed that first-year offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey will continue his play caller duties from the booth, while second-year defensive coordinator Wink Martindale will stay on the sideline.

“We’ll operate as a collective unit — Chip will handle the offense, Wink will handle the defense and JB will handle special teams, but the overall operation, coach Poggi will stand in as interim,” Moore said via Maize N Brew. “Obviously I won’t be there, but how we handle game days will flow like normal. Our players will be ready to go.”

Michigan handed down a self-imposed two-game suspension for Moore in relation to the Connor Stalions advanced scouting scandal earlier this year, while the NCAA added an additional game for the 2026 season opener last month. Moore can coach the Wolverines through the week, as his suspension will not go into effect until midnight Saturday (September 13).
